The Critical Role of Gut Health in Integrative Approaches to Autoimmune, Inflammatory & Other Complex Chronic Diseases

Autoimmune disease is growing at epidemic proportions with a very strong predominance of women being affected. Standard interventions are based on symptom control and immune suppression. This presentation with review a proactive integrative, systems biology, approach for the naturopath to address disease prediction, prevention and treatment, including various evidence-based modalities. Presentation elements will include an exploration of why females are at such increased risk. The role of the GI microbiota, food immune reactions, stealth infections and molecular mimicry in autoimmune disease pathogenesis will be explored along with how these may serve as leverage points for naturopathic clinical interventions. The hygiene hypothesis and changes in early environmental antigen exposure will also be explored. New opportunities for proactive screening for at-risk subjects for autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, inflammatory bowel diseases, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, lupus, and others using emerging predictive antibody testing will also be reviewed and discussed from the perspective of the functional and integrative medicine clinician.

Preventing and Treating Alzheimer's Disease from a Multidimensional Approach

Progress on treatment for Alzheimer's disease has progressed very little since it was first described by Alois Alzheimer. He described the finding of plaques and neurofibrillary tangles in the brain of a 50-year-old woman with psychiatric and neurological changes. The concept of Alzheimer's as an amyloid plaque problem has been the center of most of the research, with attempts at removing plaques as the definitive way to treat Alzheimer's disease. However, the pharmacologic approach to trying to dissolve amyloid plaques has proven a dead end.

Autopsies have shown that sometimes people die with large amounts of both plaques and tangles yet escape dementia. The latest evidence shows the importance of brain inflammation via activated glial cells to understand and successfully treat Alzheimer's disease. We will explore from a multi-dimensional perspective how we can unmask the silent epidemic of Alzheimer's disease.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Reviewing the role of the microglia in the immune system of the brain
  2. Understand the important role that diet plays in causing and preventing Alzheimer's disease
  3. Exploring the role of protein misfolding and heavy metals in Alzheimer's disease
  4. Review how together oxidative stress and immune-mediated inflammation contributes to Alzheimer's disease
  5. Exploring how brain cholesterol and the ApoE 4 genotype contribute to Alzheimer's
  6. Discover the critical role the gut and oral microbiome play in the development of Alzheimer's disease.

Metabolic Syndrome Reversal: the New Frontier of Assessment and Intervention

Metabolic Syndrome refers to the presence of a cluster of 5 risk factors specific for diabetes, heart disease, stroke, or all three. However, Metabolic Syndrome’s diagnoses are based on basic, not well-defined criteria. In this presentation Dr. Coetzee will take a deeper dive into some functional markers in GI, genomics, and metabolomics testing to further elucidate early-stage indicators. He will also review some of the most recent dietary, lifestyle and nutraceutical interventions in peer reviewed literature. Metabolic Syndrome is at epidemic rates in Northern America and is a reversable condition with proper early-stage intervention, it is also profitable business model to integrate for any practice. Dr. Coetzee will discuss the implementation of his MSRP program for optimal patient outcomes.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Understand the principles of the MSRP (Metabolic Syndrome Reversal Program)
  2. Learn the indicators in functional testing for early detection of MetS
  3. Understand how lifestyle, exercise, stress reduction can immediately improve the diagnostic markers
  4. Investigating the latest research in nutraceutical application for the improvement of MetS
  5. Learn about the profitable business model, by implementing group-based programs

Depression, Anxiety and Stress: A Multi-Omics Approach

Depression, anxiety, and stress-related conditions impact almost 40 million Americans each year. With so many patients suffering, practitioners need tools to help assess and determine therapeutic approaches to common mental health conditions. In this exciting presentation, Dr. Brady will teach practitioners to use a multi-omics approach (i.e., microbiomics, metabolomics, and genomics) to help determine individual contributing factors to a subject’s condition, more strategically select the most appropriate therapeutic options, and optimize outcomes for patients suffering from stress, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and mood disorders.

Key Elements of Presentation:

  • The gut-brain connection
  • Depression and mood disorders as an inflammatory disease
  • The microbiome and depression, anxiety, and mood disorders
  • Probiotics, prebiotics, and FMT as treatment options in mood disorders; the science
  • Thyroid status, the gut and depression
  • Key metabolic pathways and the use of metabolomics in managing mood disorders
  • Neurotransmitters and depression/mood disorders
  • Genomics and depression, anxiety, and stress-related disorders
  • Natural therapeutic options to support depression, anxiety, stress, and mood disorders

Functional Medicine and Athlete Care: Insights into Commonly Overlooked Approaches to Optimizing Athletic Performance

Athletes represent a compelling demographic, often viewed to the masses as paragons of health. However, a closer examination reveals potential vulnerabilities in their well-being. Engaging in rigorous training regimens that lean heavily towards catabolism, athletes frequently overlook essential requirements crucial for safeguarding their gastrointestinal health and overall health of the body. This oversight, in turn, impacts not only their physical performance but also their cognitive function, while concurrently influencing the likelihood of chronic diseases and their post-athletic longevity.

Recent observations within this population have unearthed disconcerting trends, particularly in the realms of immune dysfunction, as well as acute and chronic cardiovascular issues. This discussion aims to delve into the multifaceted factors contributing to these emerging challenges. These factors include:

  • The exposure to new environmental stressors such as pesticides
  • Various chemicals
  • Heightened electromagnetic frequencies (EMFs)
  • Mold and their Mycotoxins
  • Prevalence of other often stealth infections, including parasites, Lyme disease, and other viruses.

Additionally, we will explore the impact of overused medical interventions as potential root causes for the aforementioned health issues. Share strategies rooted in natural medicine for the eradication of these impediments, and present a more comprehensive approach to the well-being of athletes.
